It's hard to watch the news these days. As a passionate advocate for women and girls, the current political assault on our economic and physical well being is both infuriating and baffling. Paul Ryan's latest announcement—that the GOP will defund Planned Parenthood—could lead to a public health crisis, especially for the 2.5 million Planned Parenthood health services patients who live below the poverty line. Ninety-seven percent of the health care services these women receive are not abortions. Through Medicaid they receive reimbursements for STD testing and prevention, contraception, cancer screening and prevention, pregnancy tests and prenatal services. As a young woman I personally relied on Planned Parenthood and am struck by the cruel irony that the institution that enabled me to be responsible for my reproductive choices is now in jeopardy by the very same people who tout the importance of personal responsibility. This week I'm calling Speaker Ryan at 608-752-4050 to express my outrage and I'm donating to Planned Parenthood. Join me.
